THE BIG VOICE HISTORY AND REVIEWS

Pictorial history of The Big Voice

THE BIG VOICE: God or Merman?
is the "hilarious" and "tuneful" new musical from
the creators of The Last Session
about a Baptist from Arkansas and
a Catholic from Brooklyn
who find Eternal Salvation
in the Temple of Musical Theatre.

In its initial presentation, played on a bare stage
with a piano, a table and the keyboard, the
two-hander garnered rave reviews,
awards and nominations.

SHORT HISTORY
THE BIG VOICE (TBV) was born on August 12, 2002 in a fully produced "staged reading" at the Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach, California. It then opened at the Lex Theatre in Hollywood on September 12, 2002 for a three week workshop at the Blue Sphere Alliance (Lex Theatre in Hollywood).

The show then transferred to the Zephyr Theatre in October 2003 and was extended three times, garnering rave reviews and awards, among them the LA Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical Score of 2002 plus nominations by the Theatre LA Ovation Awards for Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical: Jim Brochu.. Following another workshop run at the Downstairs Cabaret Theatre in Rochester, NY, The Big Voice then attracted the attention of the prestigious Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, Texas. That led to a run at the Trinity River Arts Center in Dallas.

Encouraged by the rave reviews from each city, Jim and Steve brought The Big Voice to Chicago in March 2004, adding the new song, "How Do You Fall Back In Love," and the piece was complete. Once again, the critics were unanimous in their praise. But more than simply an entertainment, The Chicago Tribune praised it as "Potent and provocative." After Chicago, they played to sold out houses in Omaha for SNAP! Productions.

The New York debut occurred at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in Sept. 2004 and has led to a nomination as Outstanding Off-Off-Broadway Production by the 16th Annual GLAAD Media Awards (even though the show only ran for six performances). This was followed by an extended run in Los Angeles, Spring 2005 which won BEST MUSICAL, Intimate Theatre from the L.A. Ovation Awards. It opened Off-Broadway at the Actor's Temple Theatre, November 30, 2006 and ran for 6 months.

It is now available for licensing from Sam French. Cast of two.

North to south, east to west, big city, small city, Jim and Steve have found themselves embraced by just about everyone who sees them.
